After successful performances of ‘Shima’ at Underbelly Arts 2011 Anna Kuroda and I are installing a variation of the work at At The Vanishing Point in Newtown, Sydney. The opening is tomorrow night (Thursday, 6pm – 9pm), with a special live performance by Murasaki Penguin, then the exhibition runs Thursday – Sunday 10am – 6pm until the 7th August.

The waving shimmer of light on water made by sun & wind. One moment, nothing. Another, floating. It is like a zebra stripe. Murasaki Penguin’s ‘Shima’ is a dance/sound/projection-mapping work exploring 島 (shima – island), shimmer & feelings of home.

Come and see my new collaboration with Japanese dancer Anna Kuroda at the Underbelly Arts festival on Cockatoo Island, Sydney this Saturday 16th July. We have performances at 5:45pm, 7:15pm and 9:30pm.

ANAT’s Dome Lab was an exploration of live action for fulldome environments hosted by the Western Australian Supercomputer Program (WASP) at the University of Western Australia. My attendance was thanks to ANAT, Metro Screen and a full subsidy awarded by Screen Development Australia.

A series of ons and offs, 0s and 1s. Are we figures or figures? The boundaries between the real world and the digital are blurring at an alarming rate.

I was recently invited to create a new interactive sculpture for Dorkbot Sydney’s Group Show 2011 taking place at Serial Space near Central Station, Sydney from Tuesday 22nd – Saturday 26th February (12-5pm). Drop by and check out this new work alongside others by Luke Calarco, Jiann Hughes, Ross Manning, Wade Marynowsky and Michael Petchkovsky. A barbecue and artist talks by myself and most of the other artists will follow, beginning at 12:00 on Sunday 27th.

Drone 1 has been created in copper, a material growing in demand exponentially alongside digital technology. Those interacting with the work use a simple switch to transition electroluminescent figures between their 0 and 1 states. Drone 1′s sound is a processing and amplification of the inverters which drive these figures.

Dorkbot Sydney is an Australian chapter of Dorkbot; an  international network of ‘people doing strange things with electricity’. Special thanks to Pia van Gelder for curating the show.

YAK Events is offering groups and individuals the opportunity to develop new or existing work during a two week residency at Shopfront Contemporary Arts Centre in Sydney. There are no restrictions on the style, genre or nature of the work you want to make. The YAK Summer Residency is about giving artists the freedom to do as they please.

The residency will take place at Shopfront in Carlton NSW from 3 – 16 January 2011, culminating in a public showing of your work on the 15th. Spaces are limited, so move fast. With the deadlines for the next Digital Culture Fund and Geek in Residence rounds coming up the Australia Council will be running a Digital Program Face to Face meeting at the Australia Council headquarters in Sydney. As part of the event I’m doing a quick presentation on my work and the Digital Culture Fund. If you’d like to come along you can book online for free.

Wired Lab is still seeking participants for this weekend’s free DIY Wires workshop. Participants have the opportunity to build their own wires and pickups, learn different techniques for playing and recording wires and experience performances by wires pioneer Alan Lamb (Aus), Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley (France) and Oren Ambarchi (Aus).

The DIY Wires workshop will take place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th October at the Wired Lab site on a farm near Cootamundra, NSW, Australia. You can get directly to Cootamundra by CountryLink train from Sydney and Melbourne and there is cheap accommodation near the station. Transport from Cootamundra to the Wired Lab site is being organised by Wired Lab.

Screen Development Australia has just awarded me a full subsidy to participate in the Australian Network for Art and Technology’s Dome Lab. According to ANAT “Dome Lab is a world‐leading, industry‐focused workshop investigating the entertainment potential of fulldome and the specific challenges involved in creating compelling live‐action story‐telling for large format screens”. It will take place from the 31st of October to the 5th of November and will be hosted by the Western Australian Supercomputer Program (WASP) at The University of Western Australia.

The lab offers the opportunity to learn techniques for the creation of multimedia work using hemispheric fulldome screens and surround sound audio from international and Australian tutors including Academy Award winning writer/director Ben Shedd, 2010 Peter Rasmussen award winner Peter Morse, the University of New Mexico’s fulldome pioneer Hue Walker Bumgarner‐Kirby, Paul Bourke and Warik Lawrance.

Thanks very much to ANAT for selecting me from all the applicants around Australia, to Screen Development Australia for providing the subsidy and to Metro Screen, the NSW member of SDA for offering me a year’s membership.

‘Blind, as you see it’, a theatrical performance involving puppetry, blacklight, dance and an eastern-influenced soundtrack, is being restaged as part of The Sydney Fringe 2010. There are no boring, overly long monologues here (unless you count a strange language spoken by chairs), it’s all about visual and sonic impact, something director/composer Michal Imielski is very good at.

Performances will be at Carriageworks in Redfern, Sydney on Saturday 11th September at 6:00pm and 8:30pm, Tuesday 14th September at 8:30pm and Saturday 18th September at 9:45pm.

I operated sound for the show at Casula Powerhouse in March last year and it’s great to see it back again for The Sydney Fringe. Let me know what you think. I’ll be the guy pushing play on the obsolete CD player.
